Benefits of SCI-Step

In the past, rehabilitation after a spinal cord injury focused on adaptation to the injury. It was believed that the possibility of improvement would occur during the first six months and that recovery more than two years after an injury was unattainable.

Over the last several years, experts committed to the philosophy that with the right combination of therapies, recovery is possible-even months or years after an injury, helped changed the future for individuals suffering from a spinal cord injury.

SCI-Step offers these proven techniques to acute and chronic spinal cord injuries, allowing the ability to recover independence, movement and sensation, as well as, attain improved health and quality of life.

Functional Electrical Stimulation

SCI-Step utilizes the ERGYS2 and the RTI 300S, both functional electrical stimulation leg ergometers. FES technology allows patients with little or no voluntary leg movements to actively pedal using computer generated, coordinated contractions of the large muscles in the legs.

We also train patients using the Parastep®, a microcomputer controlled functional neuromuscular stimulation system that enables independent, unbraced ambulation.

Patient Benefits:

bulletEncourages the use of injured body parts to recover lost function
bulletForced movements stimulate damaged nerve cells to “relearn” their jobs
bulletPrevents muscle atrophy and relaxes muscle spasms
bulletImproves circulation
bulletIncreased range of motion

Gait Training

We generate normal walking patterns by controlling weight bearing, balance and posture during ambulation. Our equipment provides a secure, fall free environment for the most effective results. Research has demonstrated this type of training stimulates the entire nervous system & the Central Pattern Generator in the lower spinal cord to help promote motor memory. This training can also be used in conjunction with assistive devices such as braces, walkers and canes.

Patient Benefits:

bullet Establishes proper gait patterns, timing and posture
bullet Introduces gait training much earlier in rehab process
bullet Improves balance, walking symmetry and muscular strength
bullet Increases cardiovascular endurance
bullet Aids in the prevention of osteoporosis

Weight Bearing

Standing has been demonstrated to prevent, reverse, or improve many of the adverse effects of prolonged immobilization. It also aids in the prevention of contractures of the ankles, knees and hips and the improvement of range of motion. Patients report a decrease in spasticity and improvements in renal and bowel function.

Patient Benefits:

bullet Prevention or reversal of osteoporosis
bullet Improves balance, circulation and muscle tone
bullet Prevents pressure sores by relieving the amount of time spent sitting
bullet Normalization of respiratory function

Cardiovascular Conditioning

Aerobic exercise maintains cardiovascular strength and is extremely important for optimal health in all individuals, especially those with compromised systems and those who are considered sedentary.

Patient Benefits:

bullet Increases cardiac output and blood pressure regulation
bullet Aids in blood flow to skeletal muscles, skin and the heart
bullet Reducing body fat and increases the immune system

Orthodic Training

SCI-Step patients have the ability to use custom orthodic bracing to supply the preliminary element to initiate muscle reeducation. Orthotic devices can decrease tone and pain, allowing the individual greater independence with activities of daily living.  These devices can help with ambulation, transfers, skin care and contracture reduction.

Patient Benefits:

bullet Allows functional activity
bullet Increases independence
bullet Improves joint range of motion
bullet Improves lower extremity blood flow

Strength Training

The American College of Sports Medicine recommends strength training of a moderate intensity, sufficient to develop and maintain fat-free weight, should be an integral part of an adult fitness program.

Patient Benefits:

bullet

Increases lean muscle mass and muscle strength power, and endurance

bullet

Increases the body's metabolic rate, causing the body to burn more calories

bullet

Increase bone density and the prevention of osteoporosis

bullet

Improves balance and posture

EMG Biofeedback

Electromyography (EMG) Biofeedback is designed for neuromuscular therapy aimed at returning or improving voluntary muscle control. Through visual and audio feedback, patients learn how to reproduce, maintain, and control EMG responses for maximum improvement in muscle function.

Patient Benefits:

bulletProvides immediate feedback
bulletImproves voluntary muscle control

Aquatic Therapy

Using aqua therapy, patients can simulate appropriate movement mechanics and train virtually pain free. Water also provides resistance for range of motion and strengthening exercises. The variable speed treadmill allows patients to progress at their own pace, while the buoyancy of the water eliminates the fear of falling.

Patient Benefits:

bulletFocuses on muscles groups that have been recovered
bulletIncreases the ability to detect small body movements
bulletDistinguishes deliberate movement from movement caused by gravity

Acupuncture

Based on traditional Chinese Medicine, life-force energy permeates all living things through meridian channels.  Using a needle or laser beam at specific points on the skin, acupuncture promotes or unblocks the energy flow. Several specific studies conducted outside of the United States showed beneficial outcomes including reduction in spasms, increased sensation and the reduction of pressure sores for individuals with an SCI.

Patient Benefits:

bullet Valuable for recovery of bowel, bladder and sexual function
bullet Effective for repetitive stress injuries
bullet Decreases insomnia, fatigue, anxiety and depression

Massage Therapy

Therapeutic touch has been linked to health and healing and recent research indicates that massage therapy is beneficial as a treatment for people with a spinal cord injury.

Patient Benefits:

bullet Reduces pain associated with repetitive movements
bullet Decreases stress, muscle spasms, anxiety and depression
bullet Improves range of motion, circulation and energy

Reflexology

Reflexology is a natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the hands, feet and ears that correspond to every part, glad and organ of the body.

Patient Benefits:

bulletImproves circulation
bulletPromotes the natural function of specific areas of the body
bulletRelieves tension

Neuro Emotional Technique™

Neuro Emotional Technique™ is based on a proven combination of the latest scientific research and centuries-old techniques used in Eastern healing. By acknowledging the relationship between the body's emotional health, environmental toxicity, nutritional balance and structural integrity, patients create a healthier well-being.

Patient Benefits:

bulletStructure: Balance, alignment and optimum biomechanics of your skeletal system is essential for a properly functioning, interference free nervous system
bulletEmotions: Our emotional health affects our attitude, our relationships and our ability to interpret the world.
bulletToxins: We live in an increasingly polluted environment. The air we breathe and the water we drink lack the healthful properties we require.
bulletBiochemistry: Today's produce are often devoid of essential vitamins and minerals because they are grown in depleted soils using artificial fertilizers.
