In the past, rehabilitation after a spinal cord injury focused on adaptation to the injury. It was believed that the possibility of improvement would occur during the first six months and that recovery more than two years after an injury was unattainable. Over the last several years, experts committed to the philosophy that with the right combination of therapies, recovery is possible-even months or years after an injury, helped changed the future for individuals suffering from a spinal cord injury. SCI-Step offers these proven techniques to acute and chronic spinal cord injuries, allowing the ability to recover independence, movement and sensation, as well as, attain improved health and quality of life. Functional Electrical Stimulation SCI-Step utilizes the ERGYS2 and the RTI 300S, both functional electrical stimulation leg ergometers. FES technology allows patients with little or no voluntary leg movements to actively pedal using computer generated, coordinated contractions of the large muscles in the legs. We also train patients using the Parastep®, a microcomputer controlled functional neuromuscular stimulation system that enables independent, unbraced ambulation. Patient Benefits:
Gait Training We generate normal walking patterns by controlling weight bearing, balance and posture during ambulation. Our equipment provides a secure, fall free environment for the most effective results. Research has demonstrated this type of training stimulates the entire nervous system & the Central Pattern Generator in the lower spinal cord to help promote motor memory. This training can also be used in conjunction with assistive devices such as braces, walkers and canes. Patient Benefits:
Weight Bearing Standing has been demonstrated to prevent, reverse, or improve many of the adverse effects of prolonged immobilization. It also aids in the prevention of contractures of the ankles, knees and hips and the improvement of range of motion. Patients report a decrease in spasticity and improvements in renal and bowel function. Patient Benefits:
Cardiovascular Conditioning Aerobic exercise maintains cardiovascular strength and is extremely important for optimal health in all individuals, especially those with compromised systems and those who are considered sedentary. Patient Benefits:
Orthodic Training SCI-Step patients have the ability to use custom orthodic bracing to supply the preliminary element to initiate muscle reeducation. Orthotic devices can decrease tone and pain, allowing the individual greater independence with activities of daily living. These devices can help with ambulation, transfers, skin care and contracture reduction. Patient Benefits:
Strength Training The American College of Sports Medicine recommends strength training of a moderate intensity, sufficient to develop and maintain fat-free weight, should be an integral part of an adult fitness program. Patient Benefits:
EMG Biofeedback Electromyography (EMG) Biofeedback is designed for neuromuscular therapy aimed at returning or improving voluntary muscle control. Through visual and audio feedback, patients learn how to reproduce, maintain, and control EMG responses for maximum improvement in muscle function. Patient Benefits:
Aquatic Therapy Using aqua therapy, patients can simulate appropriate movement mechanics and train virtually pain free. Water also provides resistance for range of motion and strengthening exercises. The variable speed treadmill allows patients to progress at their own pace, while the buoyancy of the water eliminates the fear of falling. Patient Benefits:
Acupuncture Based on traditional Chinese Medicine, life-force energy permeates all living things through meridian channels. Using a needle or laser beam at specific points on the skin, acupuncture promotes or unblocks the energy flow. Several specific studies conducted outside of the United States showed beneficial outcomes including reduction in spasms, increased sensation and the reduction of pressure sores for individuals with an SCI. Patient Benefits:
Massage Therapy Therapeutic touch has been linked to health and healing and recent research indicates that massage therapy is beneficial as a treatment for people with a spinal cord injury. Patient Benefits:
Reflexology Reflexology is a natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the hands, feet and ears that correspond to every part, glad and organ of the body. Patient Benefits:
Neuro Emotional Technique™ Neuro Emotional Technique™ is based on a proven combination of the latest scientific research and centuries-old techniques used in Eastern healing. By acknowledging the relationship between the body's emotional health, environmental toxicity, nutritional balance and structural integrity, patients create a healthier well-being. Patient Benefits:
