"My goal is not to function better in my wheelchair, it is to get up and walk again. Sci-Step's non- traditional approach to rehab allows me to focus on that goal."

By age 32 Anne had become a shooting star in the world of motorcycle racing.  After successfully making her way through the semi-pro ranks Anne accomplished a rare feat by becoming a licensed professional racer.  Anne’s sport was the male dominated world of professional motorcycle drag racing.  She was one of a small group of active professional women in the sport and was recognized as one of the fastest women in the world on a motorcycle.  On August 10, 2002 Anne had a freak accident after a successful run during a national event at the Bristol Motor Speedway.  " I was favored to win the race and I was favored to set a qualifying time. As fate would have it, I set the time but did not win the race."  In the resulting hours she learned that she had suffered a spinal cord injury to her sixth thoracic vertebrae. She was diagnosed as an ASIA A T-6.

She went to Craig Hospital for rehabilitation and then on to San Marcos, Texas for further therapy.  " Thanks to Michele Brock and Matt Ranson, we came together and formed SCI-Step."    Within the first 6 weeks at SCI-Step, she was able to balance while sitting unsupported on the ROM table, perform voluntary hip adduction and knee extension, pull herself up into a walker while supported as well as, sit up from a lying position.

In 2004 we learned that Anne suffered a hip fracture during her accident that went undetected after the paralysis was discovered.  After many discouraging trips to various doctors, Anne had a full hip replacement the summer of 2006.  The lack of muscle control in the hip allowed the hip to continuously fall out of place and so the hard decision to remove the new hip was made and took place in Jan. 2007. Since then, Anne has been undergoing therapy at SCI-Step to learn how to function with one hip and she is even able to walk in her KAFO braces again!

"With hard work, dedication and determination I will make it to the winner's circle this time around. SCI-Step was created to help with recovery from a spinal cord injury.  I will make it my personal goal to get back up. I am confident that I will recover and yes, I WILL make one more pass!"
