Age: 21 Date of Injury: June 5, 2002 Hometown: Cleveland, Ohio Injury Level: C5/6 Sci-Step Participation Dates: 5/5/03-11/22/03 "On June 10th, I was planning on moving to Greece to go to school, work and live there for the rest of my life with my girlfriend. Unfortunately, this had to be delayed because on June 5th, 2002 my friends and I were out partying and decided to go for a swim. I ended up diving off a roof into a 5 ft. pool with only 3.5 feet of water in it leaving me paralyzed from the chest down. I knew that I needed to work hard to get back on my feet and after doing the research, I decided to come to Sci-Step. My goals include standing unsupported, progressing into a manual wheelchair (accomplished in June!) and obtaining better balance." Yianni took steps in the pool in August and continues to walk longer and longer. He also locked out his knees and lifted a 2.5lb ankle weight September! He is gained a great deal of muscle mass in his legs. Yianni returned home around Thanksgiving but continues his program at a local YMCA. We worked with his insurance company to get him in an IGlide wheelchair, ERGYS2 and Easystand Glider. We speak with him often in order to keep him focused on his goals. His hard work and dedication prove that he will keep going!
